Why did the ancient Egyptians build the pyramids?

The pyramids were built as tombs for the pharaohs (rulers) of ancient Egypt, and they had chambers that contained the remains of pharaohs. However, these chambers were later robbed of their treasures. The biggest pyramid, the great pyramid, was 146.5 metres high when it was built in about 2600bc, but it is now slightly smaller.
